Silvertip Tetras are peaceful and shoaling and should be mixed with other peaceful fish. If kept with slow moving fish or very long finned fish (e.g. Long finned Tetras, male Guppies or Siamese Fighting Fish) they may nip at the fins, but apart from this vice, they are otherwise trouble free. Ideally the Silver Tip Tetra should be kept with more aggressive larger tetras, such as the Blind Cave Tetra, the Colombian Tetra, the Serpae Tetra and the Beunos Aires Tetra. The aquarium should have open swimming areas, moderate flow, and hiding spots amongst vegetation. Males may occasionally fight, but no harm is usually done.

In the aquarium silvertip tetras should be kept in a shoal of at least six fish. Silvertip tetras will be seen at their best in a well planted tank with subdued lighting and dark substrate.

Silvertip tetras are quite bold feeders and relatively unfussy. They will accept flake food, small pellet food, freeze dried food but this should be supplemented with suitably sized live or frozen food.

Male silvertip tetras have a coppery colour while females are grey.

Silvertip tetras like most other tetras are egg scatterers. The male chases the female and during the chase the eggs are laid and fertilised over fine leaved plants. A separate breeding aquarium is essential because the adults will prey on both eggs and fry alike.
