The Manacapuru Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare), also known as the Manacapuru Red-Shoulder Angelfish, is a beautiful variant of the common angelfish species found in the Manacapuru region of the Rio Negro in Brazil. It is prized for its striking appearance, particularly the bright red or orange coloration on the upper part of its body near the dorsal fin. This angelfish is popular among aquarists for its vibrant colors, graceful swimming, and relatively easy care compared to wild angelfish species like the Altum Angel.
Physical Characteristics:
- Size: Manacapuru Angelfish can grow up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length and reach a height of 20 cm (8 inches) from fin to fin.
- Coloration: Silver body with vertical black bands, and a bright red or orange "shoulder" near the base of the dorsal fin.
- Fins: Long, flowing, and translucent, with occasional hints of red or orange. The fins are prone to damage if housed with aggressive species.
Behavior:
- Temperament: Generally peaceful, though mildly territorial, especially during breeding.
- Social Behavior: Best kept in groups of at least 5-6 when young. Pairs may form as they mature and become territorial.
- Community Tank: Suitable for community tanks with peaceful, non-aggressive tankmates.
Aquarium Care:
- Tank Size: A tank of at least 150 liters (40 gallons) for a small group, with larger tanks preferred for fully grown adults.
- Water Parameters: Ideal temperature range of 25°C to 29°C (77°F to 84°F), pH range of 6.0 to 7.0, and soft to moderately hard water (GH of 3-8 dGH).
- Tank Setup: Soft, sandy substrate, tall plants, driftwood, and rocks, with moderate lighting and calm water flow.
