Black Tiger Badis – Bring Striking Striped Nano Fish to Your Planted Tank!
Black Tiger Badis displays sharp black and white tiger-like bands across its slender body that stand out in low-light aquariums. This Dario sp. ‘Black Tiger’ variety remains small and peaceful, which makes it ideal for community nano setups. Aquarists select these fish because they add subtle movement and contrast among plants. Their calm temperament suits planted tanks with careful companions.
Size and Lifespan
Black Tiger Badis grows to roughly 2–3 cm at maturity, so they stay compact throughout life. They typically live 3–5 years when keepers maintain stable soft water and provide quality food. Regular monitoring supports their health over the years.
Ideal Tank Setup
Choose a tank of at least 40 litres for a small group of Black Tiger Badis to allow natural territory establishment. Plant densely with fine-leaf species, add smooth stones, and include driftwood pieces for cover. To replicate its natural habitat, use dim lighting and gentle filtration that keeps water slow-moving. Maintain soft acidic conditions with pH 5.5–7.0 and temperature 22–26°C.
Compatible Tank Mates
Remains peaceful and coexists well with other small non-aggressive fish. They rarely bother tankmates when space allows. Suitable tank mates include small rasboras, micro rasboras, ember tetras, pygmy corydoras, and shrimp such as cherry or amano. Avoid larger or nippy species that could harass them.
Diet and Feeding
Offer carnivorous meals to keep them active and healthy. Live or frozen brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms form the main diet. Supplement with high-quality micro pellets occasionally. Feed small amounts once or twice daily and remove leftovers quickly to protect water quality.
Breeding and Behaviour of Black Tiger Badis
Shows territorial behaviour during breeding when males display vivid stripes to attract females. These fish lay eggs among dense plants and guard the site briefly. They move deliberately through cover and interact calmly in groups. Stable soft water encourages natural patterns and reduces stress noticeably.
