The Bumblebee Catfish (Pseudomystus siamensis), also known as the Asian Bumblebee Catfish, is a stunning freshwater species native to Southeast Asia. Its bold black-and-yellow banded pattern, peaceful nature, and nocturnal habits make it a favourite among aquarists seeking an intriguing bottom-dweller. This hardy fish thrives in a variety of setups, including community aquariums.
Size and Lifespan
The Asian Bumblebee Catfish grows to an average size of 12–15 cm (5–6 inches) when fully mature. With proper care, including a stable environment and a varied diet, it can live for 6–8 years. Ensuring excellent water quality and plenty of hiding spots is key to its long-term health.
Ideal Tank Setup
A 150-litre tank or larger is ideal for the Asian Bumblebee Catfish, allowing ample room to swim and explore. To replicate its natural environment:
- Use soft sand or smooth gravel substrate to accommodate its bottom-dwelling habits.
- Add caves, driftwood, and dense vegetation for hiding and resting during the day.
- Maintain subdued or dim lighting to suit its nocturnal nature.

Avoid very small fish, which may be seen as prey, or highly aggressive species that could stress this catfish. Keeping them singly or in small groups works best, depending on the tank size.
