The Petricola Catfish, commonly known as the cuckoo catfish, is a beautiful, popular, and peaceful species that makes an ideal addition to community and African cichlid aquariums. Their attractive coloration, fast activity level, and relatively small size make them a favourite among hobbyists’ cichlid keepers especially. These fish have also been gaining popularity amongst home breeders as these are fun fish to spawn in the home aquarium.
These typically grows to a maximum size of 10-12 centimeters (4-5 inches), though some sources mention slightly smaller or larger maximums, with most hobbyists seeing them reach around 4 inches in home aquariums, making them suitable for medium-sized tanks (around 150L or 40 gallons minimum). They are known as dwarf catfish, but still need ample space and hiding spots.

- Average Max: 10-12 cm (4-5 inches).
- Smaller End: Some state around 10.2 cm (4 inches).
- Dwarf Variety: A related species, Synodontis lucipinnis, is often called the Dwarf Petricola and stays slightly smaller.
Tank & Care:
- Tank Size: A minimum of 150 liters (around 40 gallons) for a small group is recommended.
- Habitat: They love rocky areas with caves and hiding places, replicating their Lake Tanganyika home.
