Tridacna ningaloo is a cryptic giant clam species originally described from Western Australia's Ningaloo Reef. While morphologically similar to Tridacna maxima, taxonomic and genetic studies have evaluated its relationship to and potential synonymy with Tridacna noae (Noah's giant clam).
Key Characteristics
Appearance: Features an asymmetrical, partially embedded shell with scaly ridges and prominent ribs that closely mimic T. maxima.
Genetics: Initial DNA evidence isolated it as a distinct lineage near Ningaloo Reef and the Solomon Islands, though ongoing taxonomic debates link its haplotypes closely with Tridacna noae.
Habitat: Found embedded in shallow coral reef substrates and intertidal zones.
