Marine Hermit Crabs are a great addition to your tank and form part of a great "clean up crew" for your tank.
Physical Traits and Shell Dependence
Soft Abdomen: Unlike true crabs, their rear body lacks a hard shell and is twisted to fit snugly inside spiral mollusk shells.
Growth and Molting: They shed their outer skin regularly; as they get bigger, they must find larger empty shells to move into.
Size Range: Most popular aquarium species stay small, growing between 2.5 cm (1 inch) and 4 cm, though some wild species grow much larger. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Aquarium Care and Diet
Reef Compatibility: Generally peaceful and safe with corals, though they may eat tiny snails or compete for food if underfed.
Water Parameters: Maintain a temperature of 22–26°C (72–78°F), pH of 8.1–8.4, and salinity level of 1.023–1.025.
Diet: Omnivorous scavengers that consume green hair algae, cyanobacteria, detritus, and leftover fish food.
Shell Provision: Always provide extra empty shells of varying sizes in the tank to prevent fighting.
