The Spider Sponge (Trikentrion flabelliforme) is a rare marine organism celebrated by aquarium enthusiasts for its striking, tree-like structure covered in a distinct, web-like pattern. Though frequently referred to as a "spider sponge coral," it is actually a symbiotic pairing of a red or orange sponge and a non-photosynthetic colonial polyp.
Specialized Aquarium Care Requirements
This organism is extremely challenging to keep and is recommended only for experienced, expert reef aquarists.
- Strict No-Air Exposure: Never let the sponge contact the air. Trapped air bubbles inside its porous body block food filtration, causing localized tissue death that can prove fatal to the entire organism.
- Intense Target Feeding: Neither the sponge nor the Parazoanthus polyps are photosynthetic, meaning they do not use light for energy. They are active filter/suspension feeders that require heavy, frequent dosing of phytoplankton, zooplankton, rotifers, and marine snow.
- Shaded Placement: It thrives in dark or low-light zones of the aquarium. Placing it directly under high-intensity reef LEDs encourages nuisance algae to grow over the sponge, choking its filter pores.
- High Water Flow: Strong, varied water movement is essential to continuously carry food particles across its body and keep waste or detritus from settling on its delicate tissue.
