The Raccoon Tetra (Hyphessobrycon procyon) is a rare, peaceful freshwater fish native to Brazil's Rio Aripuanã. Growing up to 1.5 inches, they are prized for their rosy-gold bodies and distinctive, raccoon-like dark eye masks. They thrive in groups of six or more in planted aquariums with temperatures of 23–28°C and soft water.

  • Tank Size: Minimum of 10 to 20 gallons to accommodate a small school and provide adequate swimming space.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 23–28°C (74–82°F)
    • pH Level: 6.0 to 7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral)
    • Hardness: Soft to medium water (2–15 dGH) 
  • Diet: Omnivorous. They accept high-quality micro-pellets, flakes, and frozen or live foods like baby brine shrimp. 
  • Tank mates: Excellent for community tanks with non-aggressive nano fish, dwarf cichlids, and other peaceful tetrasecause they are not mass-produced in commercial fish farms and are largely wild-caught or carefully tank-raised, they are relatively rare and usually more expensive than standard tetra varieties.
